Mary V. Herrmann, M.S.
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
MFC23962
As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am educated and trained to
provide therapy with an emphasis on relationships to individuals, couples,
families, children and teens including foster children and older adults. Many
of the problems encountered by clients seem to be centered around our developed
styles of communications. I believe many of these communication problems are
created by influences throughout our lives but primarily in our developing years
into young adulthood. Influences include “messages” from and experiences with
parents, teachers, religion, friends and relatives, trauma and life in general.
We develop “triggers” that become symbolic of those messages and experiences.
Our thoughts and beliefs portray those symbols and can lead to negative and
uncomfortable emotions or feelings. These triggers are not always conscious but
we can still react or respond to them.
By learning to identify our feelings and then our thoughts or beliefs, we can
correct those inaccurate thoughts or beliefs or explore alternative thinking.
When that happens, it can change our perspectives and thus our behaviors and
communications. Within relationships, it can improve how we interact or respond
to each other and make possible more healthy and happy relationships.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
I became licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1988. I graduated
from CSU at Long Beach, CA with a B.A. in Psychology and from CSU at Dominguez
Hills, CA, I graduated with a M.S. in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling.
After obtaining my Masters, I became employed by the Dept. of Children and
Family Services (CPS) in Los Angeles, CA as a Children’s Social Worker (CSW)
working with foster children. I remained a CSW for 11-1/2 years before moving
to Oakhurst, CA. I then counseled probation teenaged boys at three group homes
in Oakhurst, Fresno and Clovis for one year. I began private practice in
Oakhurst in January 2001. I continue to improve my counseling skills and
expertise through continuing education courses as required by our
profession.
